Quarantine Procedure
We at Nisei Koi farm follow a very structured quarantine procedure for the koi we produce at our farm. Our koi are hatched in the mudpond and undergo our strict culling process during the first 5/6 months of life. During their first fall/winter they are harvested and brought inside to our greenhouse ponds to a 0.3% salt water solution. This eases the transition from the natural earthen pond environment to the recirculated clear water environment in our greenhouses. Young koi are particularly sensitive to change. As they are raised in 'wild' conditions parasites are often found on the koi in the first few weeks following harvest. The stress of harvest weakens the koi and opportunistic parasites can debilitate the fish quickly if not treated effectively.
We use a microscope to frequently check the mucus coat of each batch of koi to see which parasites are present and treat for those specific problems. After the stress of the chemotherapy to remove these parasites we then pamper all the koi with a quiet time during which they are fed well to bring them back to full strength.
This process usually takes 8-12 weeks depending on the number of different species of parasites found.
This process is repeated each year as the best koi go back to the mudponds for another summer's growth.
We do this work to ensure that we supply our dealers and distributors with healthy strong koi. This means that you will have far fewer losses in your store which translates to better profits for your koi sales!
