The Nisei koi farm
The Nisei koi farm
Not unlike many other Koi dealers, when Quality Koi Company was a retail business in Philadelphia, Pa, we experienced our share of frustrations. After talking with a number of companies we realized that the koi industry was lacking affordable koi of high quality and good health. It was this challenge that we based our farms mission. In 2001, Quality Koi Company branched off from our retail company and opened our 42 acre farm in New Jersey, to exclusively breed koi. The farm was named “Nisei Koi Farm.” Nisei meaning Second Generation. To breed koi of high quality we have to breed of the highest quality parent stock we could own. These koi come from the top breeders in Japan.
Striving for quality, our farming style is very labor intensive. Parent koi are matched based on many combinations of genetic traits we wish to see in their offspring. We produce a large number of varieties each year, including; red, black and white koi, metallic koi – yellow and golds, blue koi, Gin Rin – Shiny scaled koi, to name a few.
Our koi are culled heavily thru the first few months of life, leaving only the best of the best to be harvested in the fall. We offer one year old koi up to 12 inches and 2 years and older koi in the 12 inch plus sizes. We cull for four different qualities: pond grade, premium grade, select grade and tategoi grade.
Koi health on our farm is top priority. Again, very labor intensive. Water quality is tested in each tank on a regular bases. All koi must go thru our quarantine prior to sale. The koi get sample scrapes, checking for any parasite, regularly to assure they are clean and health for sale after quarantine is complete. If we feel for any reason the koi are not health we will not let them leave the farm.
Our farming style has positively enhanced American Koi’s reputation. Dealers now have a resource to purchase koi of a higher grade for the same cost of an imported koi. Buying American Koi eliminates the long, stressful and costly shipping from another country. Dealers are able to purchase koi that are healthy and ready for sale, and are not losing profits due to fish losses from weak or unhealthy koi. Furthermore, a dealer now is able to contact to source of the koi if any problems arise. Having the ability to speak directly to the breeding farm, the dealer can be informed on the quarantine procedures that had already taken place or can get help with water quality and stocking issues. Dealers are assured that the koi they are purchasing has been bred and raised on our farm, eliminating the chance of introducing any koi viruses to your customers.
With our farm specializing in just koi, 100% of our focus is making a quality product, staying in the fore front of koi health and helping lead the renaissance and evolution of American bred koi.
